Removing Car Window Tint

Removing car window tint is required once every 5-6 years, because the old film gets damaged over the years and everyone wants his car to have a fresh new look. Re-tinting requires removing the old film on the car's windows. Most shops charge from 50.00 to $75.00 for removing car window tint. There are several methods available depending on the window and the film used.

When removing the tint on a rear window, you must pay special attention, because you wouldn't want to damage the defroster lines and the whole system. To avoid that, don't use the standard method of scraping off the film with a razor, as the razor would remove the electrolyte coating.

Typically, when you are about to re-tint the windows, the old film is dry, so it's a good idea to apply some fluid or spray a solution of window cleaner with ammonia on the old film. Spray it on every 15 minutes for one hour to keep it wet. After you apply the cleaning fluid, park the vehicle out with direct sunlight on the window to be stripped. Now, try to peel off the tint, starting from a corner. Do it slowly, as this often will allow the old adhesive to be removed with the film and make your job a whole lot easier. Peeling the film too fast will cause the adhesive to remain on the roll-down once the film has been removed. If it resists, then spray it again, leave it for another 30 minutes and repeat the operation. At some point, the cleaner will soak through the film and attack the adhesive under it, making it soft and less aggressive.

It is very important that there is no glue left, from the old film. Test it, by putting your finger on the window, if it sticks, then there is still a layer of adhesive left on the glass, that you have to remove before installing the new film. If you don't remove all the glue, it will show up as white blotches under the new installation. Therefore, run your hand over the whole window and check if there is any glue left on it. You can use coarse backing to scrub it off, but be ware as some of them might scratch the glass. Hence, scrub a corner of the window first, see if it's ok before proceeding with the entire window. Another useful piece of advise is to cover the speakers and real brake light unit, so they don't interfere with liquid chemicals that you will be applying to soften the film. The whole operation takes about 2-3 hours, depending on your skills and experience.
